We’ve just updated Thrix to make it more powerful than ever!
✅ Create a reference from a DOI
✅ Get suggestion article or website titles for URLs
✅ See fewer, clearer comments, with more accurate suggestions
✅ Improved recognition of citations and references
What is a DOI?
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique ID assigned to a published work, such as a journal article, book, or report. It provides a permanent link to the work online, even if the web address changes.
Here’s an example of a DOI:
10.1002/smtd.201800449
When combined with the resolver, https://doi.org/, they become URLs, like this:
https://doi.org/10.1002/smtd.201800449
These URLs will redirect you to the online document.
Where do I find a DOI?
Most journal articles, books, and reports that have a DOI display it clearly on the publisher’s website, usually near the title, author list, or citation information.
Common places to find the DOI:
- On the article’s landing page on the journal or publisher site
- In the PDF version of the article, often on the first page or in the header/footer
- On databases like PubMed, Crossref, or Google Scholar (look for ‘DOI’ in the citation metadata)
How to generate a reference from a DOI
Thrix can convert a DOI to a full reference automatically, in seconds.
1. Copy the DOI, or the full URL containing the DOI, for example:
- 10.1002/smtd.201800449
- https://doi.org/10.1002/smtd.201800449
2. Go to www.thrix.ai, and paste in the DOI or URL

3. Select your style, (for example IEEE)

4. Tap Thrix it
Thrix finds the correct metadata online, and creates a full, formatted reference. No more time-consuming manual lookups, no more missing or incorrect details, and all in the format you need.

5. Tap Export
Thrix will copy your references to your clipboard, so you can paste them into Word, Google Docs, or any other editor. And you’re done!
How does Thrix compare to other tools?
Other tools like Trinka and Edifix don’t work as well because they just use online metadata without properly editing it. When Thrix writes a full reference from a DOI, you get these advanced features:
- Correct capitalization of titles
- metadata often stores them in Title Case, when Sentence case is needed
- style guides often have precise preferences about 4 and 5-letter prepositions
- Correct journal abbreviation standards (ISO 4 or NLM), even when that is missing from online metadata
- Precise and unusual style guide rules, like APA using an ellipsis followed by the last author instead of using et al.
Can ChatGPT write references for me?
If you’re tempted to use ChatGPT to edit references, or create a reference from a DOI, we strongly advise against it. ChatGPT is a powerful AI, but when it comes to reference editing it’s inconsistent, unreliable, and can even make up references that don’t exist.
Thrix doesn’t hallucinate or guess. If it can’t find your reference online, it will tell you!
